Secrecy around links to offshore assets raised red flags

Investigative Journalist Latashia Naidoo says the secrecy around the 57 000 South African links to offshore assets has raised many red flags, which will be revealed in days to come.

Naidoo is the South African lead on the Pandora investigative project.

It is the biggest offshore data leaks in history that have revealed the secret wealth and hidden assets of some of the world’s richest and most powerful people.

Naidoo says the leak exposes an entire global ecosystem that benefits the wealthy.

“Why would a local entity or business or businessperson choose to hide their wealth or choose to invest their wealth offshore in tax havens. That is what raised a lot of red flags for me with regards to my investigations into the data.”

“So the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) will be over the next few weeks and months breaking individual stories pertaining to high profile figures, figureheads, fugitives, celebrities, football stars and more whose business dealings, tax and secrecy havens. Whether they are legitimate or not [they] have now been uncovered through the Pandora Papers and will now be revealed through media partners around the world,” says Naidoo.
