COVID-19 super-spreader events remain a concern in the Eastern Cape despite drop in new cases

COVID-19 new infections are on a downward trajectory in the Eastern Cape. In the first two weeks of July, the province had 10 000 new cases, but the number has since dropped to 5000. The recovery rate stands at 92%.

To date, more than 800 000 people have registered for vaccinations in the province.

Briefing the media, Premier Mabuyane says despite the decline in new infections, funerals remain a concern and are considered super-spreaders of COVID-19 in the province. Mabuyane says the provincial command council is looking at proposing some adjustments to the current restrictions.

“We hope that the National Command Council probably in the near future will look at that. As long as we are able to keep numbers down not only in the Eastern Cape but as well as other provinces we got to work collaboratively as provinces and also as national to ensure that we mitigate the effects of this and minimize super spreaders,” says Mabuyane.
