President Cyril Ramaphosa says he’s concerned about the increasing cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in South Africa. Ramaphosa spoke during a hybrid sitting of the National Assembly on Thursday, where he answered oral questions on various issues affecting the country.
He reacted to a question by FF Plus leader, Pieter Groenewald, on how cases of GBV have been reduced, as well as on how backlogs are eradicated.
Ramaphosa says measures have been put in place to ensure the backlogs at forensics science labs are eradicated.
However, he says the issue remains at unacceptable levels.
“I am deeply worried about continuing spate of GBV cases and we want to ensure not only laws passed, but also implemented does take place. We need to take this seriously because really it’s a blight on our nation.”

The spike in (GBV) since the start of the lockdown has sent shockwaves across the country. In the first week alone, the South African Police Service (SAPS) recorded 2300 complaints of GBV. However, many remain unreported.
