Two N Cape schools closed due to COVID-19 outbreak

Two schools in Britstown in the Northern Cape have been closed following an outbreak of the Coronavirus at both schools.

38 teachers and learners at the Van Rensburg Primary School and Theron High School tested positive for the virus with others still awaiting the results of their COVID-19 tests.

The teachers and learners at the schools tested positive for COVID-19 after allegedly attending a farewell function with a teacher who had contracted the virus.

In a statement the provincial education department said it had instructed both schools to close for deep cleaning and called the outbreak unfortunate.

The schools are expected to reopen on October 19, 2020.

COVID-19 effects in schools to be felt for at least three years: Motshekga

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has warned that the effects of the coronavirus pandemic will be with schools for at least three years.

She says although they have trimmed down the curriculum, learners will only finish about 70% of the work they are supposed to do this year.

The remaining 30% will be incorporated into next year’s curriculum, and the work not finished in 2021 will be carried over to 2022.

She says they plan to have the curriculum back to normal in three years’ time.

Motsekga says it would have been a catastrophe if the school year was completely lost.

“Honestly, it would have been catastrophic. For me, it’s even catastrophic as it is to have especially poor kids who do not have access to reading materials and ICT access at home. Since March up to now, they have not been going to school. For me, it’s a disaster. Even when we had trimmed the curriculum we still won’t be able to clawback what we lost. So it’s a disaster. So I think we should clawback the little that we can.”

Commission hears evidence on Gama, Transnet saga

Director at Bowmans Gilfilan Attorneys, Christopher Todd says he was responsible for all advice and legal assistance given to Transnet in relation to the disciplinary process involving former Transnet Freight Rail CEO Siyabonga Gama.

The disciplinary process resulted in Gama’s dismissal in June 2010.

Todd says he was the attorney ultimately responsible for all advice and legal assistance given to Transnet in relation to the disciplinary process involving Mr Gama which resulted in his dismissal in June 2010.#StateCaptureInquiry

On Wednesday, the commission heard that Transnet agreed to pay Gama’s legal costs despite a cost order that he should in fact pay the SOE.

Transnet legal services manager, Advocate Siyabulela Mapoma told the commission that the payment was part of the conditions of Gama’s reinstatement after his dismissal for violation of procurement process.

Todd says in the first finding, the Chairperson found Mr Gama guilty of three separate charges of misconduct, he says the second finding contained the Chairperson’s findings and recommendation on the appropriate sanction.#StateCaptureInquiry

The commission’s evidence leader Anton Myburg has argued that the reinstatement of Gama went against the company policy.

“It’s a provision that says that if you’re dismissed by Transnet then you should not be reappointed, the issue here was whether there could be a deviation,” adds Myburg.

Nigerian Citizen Association to march against human trafficking, GBV and drugs

The Nigerian Citizen Association of South Africa (NICASA) is set to embark on a march against crime, human trafficking, gender-based violence and drugs on Thursday.

Organisers of the march say they will converge at Peter Rose Park in Johannesburg – seeking to stand in solidarity with victims of crime across South Africa.

In September, South Africans – under the banner of Action for Change marched to the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, where they demanded that stringent action be taken against alleged drug traffickers and crime syndicates operated by Nigerian nationals.

NICASA’s Gauteng Chairperson is Udemezue Nduka says, “The march is expected to start at 10 am at Peter Rose Park. We have been standing against these crimes since 2014 but now we have decided to take a lead because of the human trafficking across this nation and we have decided to march against any nationality – including the handful of Nigerians – who are involved in these crimes.”

SAPS, Interpol, SADC working together in fight against human trafficking

National Police Commissioner Khehla Sitole says the rise in child kidnappings in South Africa has prompted police management to engage all Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries and international Police Organisation (Interpol) to highlight the seriousness of human trafficking.

Recently, Free State police received reports of a human trafficking syndicate operating in Bloemfontein.

In Limpopo, a series of viral social media messages circulating in Polokwane, allege that there have been reports of kidnapping and human trafficking of women.

Briefing the media in Pretoria on alert Level 1 lockdown regulations, Sithole said they were working with an integrated trans-national crime prevention network.

“At transnational level, we have got transnational organised crime operations that we share with the neighbouring countries – the SADC countries. But it is also a crime that we are looking at Interpol level. These are integrated and multi-disciplinary investigations. We are also working on transnational crime prevention framework,” explains Sitole.

Eskom to take action against employees found to be involved in corruption

Eskom says it will ensure that action is taken against employees, proven to have been involved in corruption and maladministration, this as the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) investigates over 5000 employees at the power utility.

The SIU updated Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts on its investigations into alleged corruption into coal, diesel and building contracts involving billions of rands.

Eskom’s Spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha says, “Eskom has, over the past two years, made more than 100 cases with SAPS of a criminal nature – both against our own employees and some outsiders such as suppliers. We await criminal prosecutions in those matters, but Eskom is doing what it can internally to execute disciplinary processes against people, where there is evidence, and the lifestyle audits have helped Eskom get rid of some of the undesired people in its workforce.”

Trade unions call for internal audit at Eskom

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is calling for an internal audit at Eskom, saying it believes corruption is continuing at the power utility’s management level. Eskom recently announced a loss of R21 billion 2018/19; the largest-ever corporate loss in South Africa.

NUM, NUMSA and Solidarity have reiterated their call for the government to terminate Eskom’s contracts with independent power producers who would supply renewable energy to the grid, saying the IPPs pricing models are unsustainable.

NUM President, Joseph Montisetse, says Eskom cannot be financially sustainable until corruption is rooted out.

“We are against pricing models. We are saying they must stay outside Eskom because they are eating on the fiscus of Eskom. The R21 billion; if it was not the case of the contracts with IPPs, Eskom would not lose such money. Also, there must be an audit of how Eskom is selling its electricity to bigger companies. We believe there is corruption that is taking place; energy is being sold at lower prices and the international consultants, according to a whistle-blower, they are paid higher prices compared to local consultants, but they are doing the same jobs. So we need an audit on that because the government can pour in money to this entity, but if we are not cleaning the corruption; we will never go anywhere.
