Nigeria’s army says it is ready to maintain order as police protests continue

SARS

Nigeria’s army says it is ready to maintain law and order and deal decisively with any situation created by “trouble makers”, while demonstrators calling for an end to police brutality promise to keep up nationwide protests.

Protesters have staged daily marches for a week, calling for an overhaul of police forces.

Police have responded to the demonstrations with beatings, tear gas and gunfire, which human rights group Amnesty International said had killed at least 10 people.

Police agreed on Tuesday to stop using force against protesters.

The military, which in recent years has repeatedly been accused of human rights abuses that it has denied, issued a statement late on Wednesday titled “Nigerian Army warns subversive elements and trouble makers”.

“The NA (Nigerian Army) is ready to fully support the civil authority in whatever capacity to maintain law and order and deal with any situation decisively,” it said in the statement, which did not mention the anti-police protests.

In response to the protests, the head of Nigeria’s police force on Sunday dissolved the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a unit that demonstrators have long accused of beatings, killings and extortion.

Demonstrators have called for more meaningful reforms. Protesters say they fear a new unit, whose creation to “fill the gaps” left by SARS was announced on Tuesday, was just are branding of the controversial squad.

‘Members who left KwaSizabantu Mission suffered spiritual abuse’

Many of the members who left the KwaSizabantu Mission in KwaZulu-Natal suffered spiritual abuse at the hands of its leaders.

That is according to Louis Erasmus who has been testifying at the CRL Commission’s Inquiry into allegations of rape, abuse and fraud against leaders of the mission.

In the video below KwaSizabantu Mission in KZN is accused of abusing its congregants:

Erasmus worked there while he was employed by Doctors for Life International.

He also testified that he spoke to several people who told him that when they left the mission, they were forced to leave all their belongings behind.

“I also started meeting many of the people who had left the mission. You see, I was outside, not living on the mission and all of these people have a tale to tell of spiritual abuse, all of them. Many of them have also lost all of their possessions and they were forced to leave the mission with nothing. I know and have met some of these people,” adds Erasmus.

Kwasizabantu has denied all allegations against it.

This case has attracted attention as farm attacks and murders incidents are reported every now and then in the country.

NPA to oppose Andre Pienaar bail application

The National Prosecuting Authorities (NPA) in the Free State says it will oppose the bail application by Andre Pienaar 51, in the Bloemfontein High Court on Thursday.

Pienaar is facing several charges including attempted murder, malicious damage to property and public violence. He was arrested last week following a violent protest in Senekal magistrate’s court.

A group of protestors mainly farmers stormed the court building, overturned and set alight a police vehicle after two men accused of the murder of farm manager Brendin Horner appeared.

Free State businessman Andre Pienaar denied bail

Pienaar through his legal representative has approached the Bloemfontein high court after he was denied bail by the Senekal magistrates court on Tuesday.

Free State NPA spokesperson Phaladi Shuping, “We were made aware yesterday when our prosecutor was provided with documents relating to the intention of the accused in this case to appeal the decision of the Senekal magistrate’s court not to grant him bail…”

“Our intention as the NPA is to oppose that bail application because we still maintain that it would not be in the interest of justice for the accused to be released on bail,” says Shuping.

Meanwhile Police Minister Bheki Cele says officers are prepared for any eventuality on Friday at the Senekal Magistrate’s Court in the Free State where the two suspects in the killing of farm manager Brendin Horner are to appear.

Cele confirmed that one of the accused had been arrested 16 times and the other three times on various charges. On Tuesday, some members of the community of Senekal prayed for calm after the last court appearance where protesters demanded that the two suspects be handed over.

More arrests to be made following Senekal violence

Mixed reactions to violence

There has been a range of mixed reactions to the violence which broke out in Senekal following Horner’s murder.

Deputy CEO of Civil Rights Organisation AfriForum says although violence is regrettable and cannot be condoned, the community’s anger is understandable.

Police have been criticised for what was deemed ‘their perceived lack of action’ to quell the protests.

On the other hand, the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) commended the police’s handling of the protests, after the crowd dispersed when police fired a warning shot.

Roets further expressed concern over the possibility of escalating protests should government not urgently address the issue of farm attacks.

The Senekal Safety Association says while violence cannot be condoned, government leaders should also refrain from chanting slogans that may incite racial hatred during protests.

Two N Cape schools closed due to COVID-19 outbreak

Two schools in Britstown in the Northern Cape have been closed following an outbreak of the Coronavirus at both schools.

38 teachers and learners at the Van Rensburg Primary School and Theron High School tested positive for the virus with others still awaiting the results of their COVID-19 tests.

The teachers and learners at the schools tested positive for COVID-19 after allegedly attending a farewell function with a teacher who had contracted the virus.

In a statement the provincial education department said it had instructed both schools to close for deep cleaning and called the outbreak unfortunate.

The schools are expected to reopen on October 19, 2020.

COVID-19 effects in schools to be felt for at least three years: Motshekga

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has warned that the effects of the coronavirus pandemic will be with schools for at least three years.

She says although they have trimmed down the curriculum, learners will only finish about 70% of the work they are supposed to do this year.

The remaining 30% will be incorporated into next year’s curriculum, and the work not finished in 2021 will be carried over to 2022.

She says they plan to have the curriculum back to normal in three years’ time.

Motsekga says it would have been a catastrophe if the school year was completely lost.

“Honestly, it would have been catastrophic. For me, it’s even catastrophic as it is to have especially poor kids who do not have access to reading materials and ICT access at home. Since March up to now, they have not been going to school. For me, it’s a disaster. Even when we had trimmed the curriculum we still won’t be able to clawback what we lost. So it’s a disaster. So I think we should clawback the little that we can.”
