Voters in Mahikeng hope service delivery issues will be addressed

Some residents of the North West capital, Mahikeng, who have cast their votes for local government, insist that those elected must urgently address their service delivery issues. These include water shortages.

Most voting stations around Mahikeng got off to a slow start. While some were happy to cast their ballots, voters say water provision, electricity, and jobs are some of their main concerns.

“There are no jobs. We need water and proper roads in our ward,” says one of the voters.

Another voter says; “We haven’t got water in this place, and the place is dirty. We’ve got nothing, the roads are broken.”

At the Ward 15 voting station, some residents lined up outside the community hall for water while registered voters cast their ballots.

This was a stark reminder of water shortages and how it has impacted the daily lives of residents.

“I want to see developments in our ward because they promised service delivery, but they didn’t deliver. So, my vote today, I wish that we can have delivery. You see there’s a lack of water, residents are suffering,” says one of the residents, Gogontle Gopane.

The residents are hopeful that the new council will address their service delivery challenges.

Ethiopia government says Tigray forces killed 100 youths in key town

The Ethiopian government accused rebellious Tigrayan forces on Monday of killing 100 youths in the town of Kombolcha, as the United States expressed concern about Tigrayan advances a year into the fighting.

The Tigrayan forces led by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) denied the allegation. Spokesperson Getachew Reda said from an undisclosed location, “We don’t have to kill the youth. There was no resistance in Kombolcha.”

Government spokesperson Legesse Tulu did not respond when asked by phone and message for a comment on Getachew’s statement, but he had earlier in the day referred Reuters to the government statement on the alleged killing in Kombolcha.

The Tigrayan forces have been fighting the government for the past year in a widening war that has destabilised Africa’s second most populous nation.

Communications to the area are down and journalists are barred. On Sunday, Getachew, the TPLF spokesperson, said its fighters had pushed south to take Kombolcha and its airport. If confirmed, it would be the closest the TPLF has got to the capital since pushing into Tigray’s neighbouring region of Amhara in July.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed later that day called on all citizens to mobilise – threatening to exacerbate a conflict that has threatened to tear apart a country once seen as a stable Western ally in a volatile region.

The Government Communication Service said on Twitter, “The terrorist group TPLF has summarily executed more than 100 youth residents of Kombolcha in areas it has infiltrated.”

The statement gave no further details and Legesse, the government spokesperson, did not answer phone calls seeking comment about whether those killed were combatants or civilians.

HUMANITARIAN CRISIS

While he has in general decried ethnic cleansing and other abuses in the war, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken earlier on Monday criticised Tigrayan forces, saying he was alarmed by reports that they had taken Kombolcha and Dessie, a nearby town that the Tigrayan forces said they had seized on Saturday.

“Continued fighting prolongs the dire humanitarian crisis in northern Ethiopia. All parties must stop military operations and begin ceasefire negotiations without preconditions,” Blinken said.

Tens of thousands of ethnic Amharas have sought refuge from an escalation in fighting in Dessie. The government denied Dessie, which is north of Kombolcha, was under Tigrayan control.

The capture of Kombolcha would be a strategic gain for the fighters against Ethiopia’s military and their allies, who are trying to dislodge the Tigrayans from the Amhara region.

War broke out a year ago between federal troops and the TPLF, which dominated Ethiopian politics for nearly 30 years before Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was appointed in 2018. The conflict has killed thousands of civilians and forced more than 2.5 million people to flee their homes.

Residents of Limpopo’s Vhembe District cast their votes

Some people were turned away at a voting station in Vuwani in the Collins Chabane municipality in Limpopo after their names were not found in the voters’ roll.

The 2016 and 2019 elections in Vuwani were marred by violence due to a municipal demarcation dispute.

Pensioners who went to Avhatondwi primary school as early as 5 o’clock in the morning were among those affected. Pensioner Jane Molewa Khosa was the first to cast her ballot at Avhatondwi secondary.

Khosa says she is happy that she could vote in a peaceful environment. “I am very  excited to enter this gate to come here to vote at Avhatondwi Primary voting station, we have had ten years without voting here because of violence there and there.”

At Vhudzani Secondary at Ha-Mashau village, a number of youths could be seen voting.

“I  feel happy today so I look forward to the municipality to help us with schools, roads, and water, I feel much better as a young person here at Vhudzani Secondary School that we have been given an opportunity to vote for a better future and more job opportunities.”

However, some voters were however disappointed as they were told their names are not on the voters’ roll at the station.

“We came and register here but today we are surprised that we are told to go back to our original place of Tshirunzanani, the problem is that  the old lady will have to walk as she does not transport.”

There were reports of vandalism at the voting station at Gogobole Primary School outside Thohoyandou on Sunday evening.  But voting continued as normal on Monday.

LGE 2021 | Gauteng Police Commissioner orders the release of journalist in Soweto following confrontation

Gauteng Police Commissioner, Elias Mawela has ordered the release of a television journalist who was arrested after a confrontation with the police at a voting station in Orlando East, Soweto.

In a video shared on social media, the journalist can be heard saying the police official is grabbing their camera.

“I’m currently being arrested for doing my job,” said the journalist.

Police Spokesperson, Vish Naidoo says police were forced to remove the journalist and a cameraman from the polling station.

“Police were forced to remove a journalist and a cameraman from the polling station after they allegedly interfered with the work of the presiding officer at that station. It is rather unfortunate that this situation resulted in a confrontation between police and the journalist. This matter has since been escalated to the Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng –  who ordered both the release of the journalist and an investigation into this matter,” says Naidoo.
