Ramaphosa urges King Mswati III to ensure peace returns to Eswatini

President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on Eswatini’s King Mswati III to ensure that peace returns to his country.

This as protesters in Eswatini are calling for democratic reforms and the release of the two arrested Members of Parliament.

Last week, Ramaphosa sent a special envoy led by Jeff Radebe to the kingdom, to try and quell the violence there.

Ramaphosa says the Eswatini government must ensure that stability is restored to South Africa’s neighbour.

He says he wants to see peace in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

“Prior to that, I spoke to the King and I said I’m extremely worried about the situation there. I’d like you to meet my envoy, he’s carrying a message from me which is a message from the region. The message is straight forward,” says Ramaphosa.

“We want to see peace in Eswatini and we’d like to see a dialogue beginning between the government and various organisations. I said to him on the phone : I’d like you to allow the envoy to meet you and thereafter meet other stakeholders. It is on that condition that I will sent this envoy. He agreed,” explains President Ramaphosa.

King Mswati calls for a meeting with citizens and pro-democracy groups:

‘Hope for change’

Meanwhile, People’s United Democratic Movement (PUDEMO) in Eswatini hopes the envoys sent by President Cyril Rampahosa would bring about change in that country.

PUDEMO says King Mswati III should be forced to relinquish power as the people of Eswatini are determined to reform the country.

PUDEMO President, Mlungisi Makhanya says South Africa should impose sanctions on the monarch.

In the video below, Spokesperson of the pro-democracy Swaziland Solidarity Network, Lucky Lukhele, gives more details about the pro-democracy protests:

Military forces arrest senior civilian figures in Sudan – Al Hadath TV

Military forces arrested several members of Sudan’s civilian leadership before dawn on Monday, Al Hadath TV reported, as a prominent pro-democracy group called on Sudanese to take to the streets to resist any military coup.

Family sources told Reuters that military forces had stormed the house of Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok’s media adviser and arrested him.

There was no immediate comment from the military. Sudanese state TV broadcast as normal.

Reuters witnesses said internet services appeared to be down in the capital, Khartoum.

Citing unidentified sources, Al Hadath said Hamdok had been placed under house arrest, and that unidentified military forces arrested four cabinet ministers, one civilian member of the ruling Sovereign Council, and several state governors and heads of political parties.

Sudan has been on edge since a failed coup plot last month unleashed bitter recriminations between military and civilian groups meant to be sharing power following the 2019 ouster of former leader Omar al-Bashir.

Bashir was toppled and jailed after months of street protests. A political transition agreed after his ouster was meant to lead to elections by the end of 2023.

As tensions built this month, a coalition of rebel groups and political parties aligned themselves with the military. Supporters of the military have been staging a sit-in outside the presidential palace calling on the military to dissolve the civilian government.

Last week, several cabinet ministers took part in big protests in several parts of the Khartoum and other cities against the prospect of military rule.

The military head of the Sovereign Council has previously asserted his commitment to the transition.

UN calls for immediate release of political detainees in Sudan

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned the ongoing military coup in Sudan. He has also called for the immediate release of political detainees, including Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok.

A tweet from Guterres condemned the military’s illegal power grab and called for the full respect of the country’s constitutional charter in order to protect the hard-won political transition in the country.

The US Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa region Jeffrey Feltman expressed his country’s deep alarm at the military takeover that he said contravened the democratic aspirations of the Sudanese people, calling it utterly unacceptable.

He added that any changes to the transitional government by force would put at risk future US assistance to that country.

Washington removed Sudan from a list of State Sponsors of terrorism last December in what was hoped to be the beginning of a new chapter in the relationship.

Some citizens take to the streets to protest against the coup:

Meanwhile, the International Relations Department in South Africa says it is concerned about the ongoing coup happening in Sudan.

It says South Africa rejects and condemns any attempt aimed at an unconstitutional change of government.

In a statement, the International Relations Department says the attempts to undermine Sudan’s political transition are worrisome.

It is calling on the military coup leaders to immediately release unconditionally Prime Minister Hamdok and other government officials.

Dirco further appeals to the security forces to exercise restraint, and protect the lives and property of Sudanese citizens.

In addition, the department says the country should continue with meaningful dialogue and engage in good faith to restore Sudan’s constitutional order.

Egypt’s President Sisi ends state of emergency for the first time in years

Egypt’s state of emergency will be lifted for the first time in years, President Abdel Fattahal-Sisi said on Monday.

Egypt imposed a state of emergency in April 2017 after deadly bombings of churches and has since routinely extended it at three-month intervals, despite an improved security situation.

“Egypt has become … an oasis of security and stability in the region,” Sisi wrote in a Facebook post. “Hence it was decided, for the first time in years, to cancel the extension of the state of emergency in all areas of the country.”

The state of emergency granted authorities sweeping powers to make arrests and crack down on what they call enemies of the state.

It was applied during the extension of a clampdown on political dissent under Sisi that has swept up liberal as well as Islamist critics over the past few years.

Egypt’s security forces have also been battling an insurgency by militants linked to Islamic State in northern Sinai, although they have recently consolidated their position in the area.

Prominent Egyptian activist Hossam Baghat welcomed the decision, saying it would stop the use of emergency state security courts, although it would not apply to some high-profile cases already referred to such courts.
