Correctional service officials have conducted an early morning raid at the Qalakabusha correctional centre in Empangeni, northern KwaZulu-Natal.
They uncovered at least 30 cellphones, traditional medicines and contraband.
Dagga with a street value of over R12 000 has also been confiscated.
Acting National Correctional Services Commissioner, Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale, is among the team.
It is believed that there have been three separate prison break incidents at the facility in recent years. Four inmates have escaped. Three remain at large.
