Allegations against Mabuyane will influence voters: Analyst

Some political analysts believe recent allegations against Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane will influence voters in the upcoming elections.

Mabuyane, public works MEC Babalo Madikizela and the provincial African National Congress (ANC) are implicated in the alleged misappropriation of R1.1 million meant for the memorial service of the late Winnie Madikizela Mandela in 2018.

The public protector earlier, released a report saying Mabuyane benefited to the tune of R450 000, that was used for his private home renovations, while a private company owned by Madikizela’s wife received R350 000 through the Mbizana Local Municipality.

Political analyst Dr Nkosikhulile Nyembezi says, “If there’s something questionable … those who are implicated must resign. [They should] leave their offices. Because as we go for elections on November 1, the people of South Africa are going to divorce.”

“[People] are going to divorce politicians in this marriage of inconvenience, where we see public officials looting state money and mismanaging state resource. It is time to put all that to an end.”

Mabuyane instructs attorneys to interdict Public Protector’s findings

Mabuyane has instructed his attorneys to immediately interdict the Public Protector’s findings against him.

He denies that he ever benefitted and has taken the report by Mkhwebane on judicial review.

Spokesperson for the Office of the Premier, Sonwabo Mbananga, says the Premier maintains his public statement.

“Premier maintains his public statement issued on the matter in 2019 and maintains his position that he was never involved in any acts of fraud or corruption. As a result, he has instructed his legal representatives to take the report on judicial review.”

“Because it [the report] ignored substantial information that sought to respond to the allegations levelled against him. He has further instructed his legal counsel to urgently interdict the implementation of the remedial actions.”
