SADTU calls for more investment in the well-being of teachers

The South African Democratic Teachers Union is calling for increased investment in the well-being, training, professional development and working conditions of teachers.

This as the world commemorates Teachers Day. The union says government has to invest in human resources development as teachers are crucial in producing a skilled and educated workforce.

More than 1600 teachers died from COVID-19-related complications, resulting in many teachers with a heavy workload and still grappling with the effects of the pandemic.

General Secretary Mugwena Maluleka says, “We pay tribute to those we have lost due to this insidious pandemic. We also pay homage to the many educators who did their best under difficult circumstances. As we celebrate these frontline workers in our country, we have got to make sure we honour their contribution.”

“The resilience they build or the relationships they continue to build by making sure that the condition they under are improved, teacher development is prioritised and social and psycho-social services are given to all.”

Sadtu decries failure to reach targets of vaccinating teachers

In July, Sadtu said the Department of Basic Education has failed to reach its target of vaccinating over half a million teachers and support staff against the coronavirus.

The teachers union says over 400 000 teachers have received their shots.
