Kenya’s Electoral Commission begins registering voters ahead of general elections

Kenya’s Electoral Commission began registering voters on Monday, ahead of its general elections. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati says the commission is targeting enlisting at least six million new voters, mainly youth.

With less than a year to the next general elections, Kenya’s Electoral Commission launched a countrywide mass voter registration exercise.

Most of those the commission targets are new voters. The East African nation currently has close to 20 million registered voters according to data from the commission.

To meet the target the IEBC must register at least 200 000 new voters every day. Chebukati says he is optimistic.

The commission will also conduct mass voter registration in the diaspora in December this year.

The 2022 election is significant as incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta will be retiring, opinion polls have put his Deputy William Ruto against Kenyatta’s newfound ally opposition politician Raila Odinga neck to neck.
