39 learners at Free State school hostel test positive for COVID-19

Thirty-nine (39) learners who stay at the hostel at Dr Blok High School in Bloemfontein have tested positive for COVID-19.

Spokesperson for the Free State Department of Education, Howard Ndaba says the hostel accommodates learners from Dr Blok and nearby Heide Primary School.

Ndaba says 28 of those learners are of Dr Blok and 11 learners are of Heide Primary. Five more learners who do not reside at the hostel have also tested positive.

Ndaba says they are waiting on the Health Department to give direction on the way forward amidst the latest outbreak.

COVID-19 vaccinations opened for 18-year-old and older from Friday

People who are 18-year-olds and older will be eligible to get their COVID-19 vaccinations from Friday, August 20, in South Africa..

Vaccination of this age group was only supposed to start on September 1 but the Deputy Director-General in the Department of Health Dr Nicholas Crisp said on Wednesday that there were enough vaccines in the country to move the date forward.

South Africa has recorded 13 672 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24-hours, taking the total infections in the country to 2 652 652.

A further 317  COVID-19-related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 78 694.
