Limpopo Premier accused of failure to remove regent queen of amaSwati

Residents of six villages under the Bengwenyama Ya Maswazi Traditional Council outside Steelpoort in Limpopo are accusing Premier Stanley Mathabatha of failure to remove the queen, Gogo Eunice Nkosi from the throne.

They say an agreement to remove her was reached in 2017. A group of locals protested outside the Premier’s Office. They accuse Nkosi of abandoning the royal house.

About 40 people drove for 200 kilometres from Steelport to Polokwane. The Bengwenyama ya Maswati Royal House is accusing the regent queen, Gogo Eunice Nkosi, of relocating and abandoning the royal house in 2015.

They say the community is now divided as some are loyal to her and others take orders from the traditional council.

Their memorandum was signed by an official at the Premier’s office as there were no arrangements made for the gathering.

Princess Palesa Nkosi addressed the group and gave government 24 hours to remove the regent queen.  The Princess also accused the queen of selling the community’s mining prospecting rights to an Australian company.

“This must end now the Bengwenyama ya Maswati traditional authority will open a police case of theft and fraud against the former regent. She is fraudulently attempting to sell or rather steal the preferential prospecting rights that were given to the community by the Constitutional Court judgement in 2010,” says Princess Palesa Nkosi.

Mining activities

A youth representative in the area, Andrew Madonsela says the people must benefit from mining activities on their land.

“I am a Stocking citizen, so our problem is that our former leaders have sold our mining rights to investors so that is not what we want. What we want is that the rights must go back to the community so that they must benefit the community also not individuals,” says Madonsela.

Gogo Nkosi was made regent after Chief Msuthu Nkosi passed away in 2009.  Attempts to reach her for comment were unsuccessful.
