A first-of-its-kind sanitary kit manufactured in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape, is giving pupils not only sanitary towels but also important health information.
Today, many high school pupils have been given an educational experience about the kit. It includes an educational brochure about feminine health and hygiene, as well as other essential products to improve their experience of their menstrual cycle.
Director and founder of Sisterhood SA Shaan Keegan says a lot more education needs to be done in schools on the menstrual cycle and everything associated with it.
“I think the conversation needs to be part of your LOL and I really believe that boys should be learning too because I think when girls and boys don’t have both sexes in the home, it becomes a lost subject. For me, I would like to see this as a subject in LOL, and also the boys need to be educated too. And if you have to split them to have that conversation so that you actually have a good conversation then I think that should be the aim to do that.”
Inam Nojilani and Zenande Phindani from Walmer High School in Gqeberha, who both received the kit are elated and say it’s been a life-changing experience.
“This product is very helpful, because it improves our hygiene and well being because our body as girls is very sensitive to a lot of things, so it improves our hygiene and well being,” says Nojilana.
“What I have loved about it is that it is so different from other sanitary pads that we are using and it’s also hygienic for our bodies because our bodies are very sensitive so it’s going to help us a lot,” says Phindani.
