A 41-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the armed robbery at Tsineng village police station near Kuruman in the Northern Cape on Saturday night.
The Hawks say the suspect was found in possession of all stolen firearms and ammunition taken during the robbery.
Meanwhile, the crime-fighting unit is offering a reward of R50 000 to anyone who can assist with the arrest of the two remaining suspects.
“A 41-year-old suspect has been arrested this afternoon in connection with the Tsineng police station robbery. All weapons have been recovered and more arrests are imminent,” says provincial Hawks spokesperson Nomthandazo Mnisi
In condemning the incident, Minister Cele also emphasised that this was just pure criminality due to under resourced police stations.
The three suspects made off with R5 rifles and several pistols and rounds of ammunition.
“Those are small stations that are really working hard to improve that situation, but I want to repeat it is not part of the fake news that is there to say that these people are going to be attacking police stations,” says Cele.
The Democratic Alliance in the Northern Cape says it is concerned by Police Minister Bheki Cele’s response following the robbery at the police station. The DA visited the station today.
“We however know that a multi-disciplinary investigative team from the Hawks and tactical unit is on the ground to bring the perpetrators of the act to book. And we are further concerned by attempts by National Police Minister Bheki Cele to downplay the robbery whilst Minister Cele said that the reports of looming attacks on police stations and ammunition depots is fake news, this doesn’t make the incident any less serious,” DA’s MPL Ofentse Mokae explains.
