Mangaung Metro urges residents to pay municipal rates

The Mangaung Metro Municipality has condemned the call to boycott paying of rates and taxes by residents, as a form of protest against the municipality.

This after calls made by the Mangaung Community Concerned group following shutdown protests against poor service delivery and the disbanding of the metro municipal council, citing failure to serve communities.

The embattled metro’s revenue collection has gone down by more than 20 percent since the outbreak of COVID-19.

Mangaung Metro spokesperson Qondile Khedama says the withholding of rates and taxes hampers service delivery in the municipality.

“None payment is going to reduce municipal revenue, so that is why we will discourage whoever would want to withhold payments. We are saying people must continue making payments. We are still receiving rates and taxes but I must indicate that starting from 2020 when COVID-19 started in April, we had under-collection of about 20 percent and that has not improved that much. We are urging people to pay their rates and taxes so that we may be able to provide quality services.”
