‘Rising number of COVID-19 cases in Gauteng can no longer be ignored’ – Lesufi

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the province can no longer be ignored.

According to Lesufi more than 4 700 learners and educators in the province have tested positive for the virus.

The figure has seen an increase of 1 700 infections in a week, Lesufi says that schools in the province are seeing a cluster of outbreaks in various areas.

The Department of Basic Education will be meeting with Education MEC’s on Saturday morning to discuss the rising number of infections in schools.

Meanwhile, parents, teachers, and learners say they are concerned about the impact the virus could have on teaching and learning.

The question is, “Will our schools have the capacity to continue to provide educational services from an online platform should the virus spread and schools are forced to close down?”
