Health minister to visit Limpopo hospital gutted by fire

Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize, is expected to visit the FH Odendaal hospital in Modimolle, Limpopo, on Thursday. Two patients were killed in a fire incident at the hospital. The patients, aged 70 and 78, died when two COVID-19 wards caught fire on Tuesday morning.

The fire incident at FH Ondendaal hospital has left the bereaved families devastated. One of the deceased patients, 70-year old Lucas Matsene from Marapyane village in Mpumalanga, had been admitted a day before the incident.

The other patient, 78-year old William Mehlapefrom Moletjie, outside Polokwane, was an inmate from a correctional facility. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

In April, the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Johaanesburg, Gauteng, was temporarily closed following a fire.

The blaze broke out in a storage room. It  then spread to other parts of the hospital.
