South Africa reported 103 new COVID-19-related deaths on Tuesday, raising the nationwide death toll to 53 887.
Most of the deaths are from the Western Cape, followed by the North West province.
“Eastern Cape 11, Free State 7, Gauteng 11, KwaZulu Natal 5, Limpopo 5, Mpumalanga 3, North West 34, Northern Cape 13 and Western Cape 41,” says the Minister of Health, Dr Zweli Mkhize, in a statement.
He says some provinces have been conducting data verification at facilities to ensure that all COVID-19 related deaths are reported.
Minister Mkhize has sent condolences to those who have lost their loved ones.
He has also thanked healthcare workers who took care of them.
The number of infections has climbed to 1 568 366 after 853 South Africans tested positive for the virus.
South Africa’s recovery rate remains at 95%.
The number of tests conducted to date is 10 379 089. Of these, 23 893 were completed overnight.
