COVID-19 infections in the Garden Route region of the Western Cape continue on a downward trend.
There are currently 222 active cases in the former hotspot. Provincial Health Department spokesperson Nadia Ferreira says there are currently no critical areas of concern.
“We thank residents for adhering to safety measures. We however continue to monitor all situations. We also continue to vaccinate healthcare workers, both private and public, as part of the Sisonke vaccination plan. And we plan to vaccinate the remainder of the staff who registered for the vaccine by the end of April.”
SA records 1 366 new COVID-19 cases
South Africa has recorded 1 366 new coronavirus infections in the last 24-hour cycle, taking the total number to 1 554 975.
The country has also recorded 62 new COVID-19 related fatalities on Thursday. This brings the total number of deaths to 53 173.
In a statement, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says most of the new deaths were recorded in the North West.
“Regrettably, we report 62 more COVID-19 related deaths: 1 from Eastern Cape, 11 from the Free State, 8 from Gauteng, 2 from KwaZulu-Natal, 0 from Limpopo, 5 from Mpumalanga, 30 from the North West, 5 from the Northern Cape and 0 from the Western Cape,” says Dr Mkhize.
Recoveries currently stand at 1 480 632. The cumulative number of tests conducted to date is 10 055 899.
The number of healthcare workers vaccinated under the Sisonke Protocol stands at 283 629.

More vaccines to arrive
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize says government has secured agreements for 51 million doses of vaccine doses from pharmaceutical Johnson and Johnson to combat COVID-19. He has also announced that the next batch of vaccine doses from the company is expected to arrive in the country on Monday.
Mkhize visited the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in Parktown accompanied by Gauteng Premier, David Makhura yesterday.
He inspected some vaccination sites in Gauteng to establish their preparedness for the next phase of the vaccine rollout, which will include the elderly and essential workers.
