South Africans to observe Good Friday around the country

People around South Africa are expected to attend various Good Friday services today to commemorate Easter but are being urged to observe COVID-19 protocols.

Under the updated restrictions, which were announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa earlier this week, religious gatherings will be restricted to a total number of 250 people indoors and 500 outdoors.

One of the churches that will be having Easter Services is St George’s Cathedral in the Cape Town CBD. The church is known for being a beacon of hope during the Apartheid era. Two services will be held, one at 9am and one at 12pm today.

Meanwhile, the Diakonia Council of Churches will hold a symbolic pop-up Good Friday service to honour healthcare workers’ role in the COVID-19 pandemic and those who died due to the virus.
