South Africa has recorded 2 750 new coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases to 1 611 143.
This represents an 8% positivity rate.
There have been a further 59 COVID-19-related deaths in the country, bringing the national death toll to 55 183.
In a statement, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says: “Today, 59 COVID-19 related deaths have been reported: Eastern Cape 0, Free State 5, Gauteng 20, Kwa-Zulu Natal 8, Limpopo 0, Mpumalanga 2, North West 0, Northern Cape 18 and Western Cape 6, which brings the total to 55 183 deaths.”
Recoveries now stand at 1 523 243, representing a recovery rate of 94.5%.
The number of vaccines that have been administered to healthcare workers now stands at 478 452.

The latest figures come amid concerns over some South Africans’ failure to adhere to safety protocols.
Gauteng authorities have urged residents to adhere to all COVID-19 regulations to prevent the devastating impact that could come with the third wave.
On Friday, Premier David Makhura announced that the province was officially in the grips of a third wave, while Free State authorities have raised concern over the increased number of COVID-related hospitalisations.
