Pudemo vows to intensify pro-democracy protests in Eswatini

The People’s Democratic United Movement (Pudemo) has vowed to intensify its pro-democracy protests in Eswatini.

It has rejected the conditions that King Mswati has set for a national dialogue as well as President Cyril Ramaphosa’s appeals for calm.

The protests have led to violence and the brutal death of dozens of people, allegedly at the hands of security forces.

Police have put the death toll at 37, but local civic group the Leftu Sonkhe Institute of Strategic Thinking and Development suggests that it has reached 80.

Campaigners accuse King Mswati of ignoring calls for reforms meant to move eSwatini towards democracy.

Southern African Development Community (SADC) envoys South Africa, Namibia and Botswana visited Eswatini on Thursday and Friday last week and met with the king in the latest effort to restore stability.

Former Minister, Jeff Radebe led the SADC delegation that Ramaphosa sent in his capacity as Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Defence, Politics and Security Co-operation.
