Bail application of men charged with murder during Phoenix unrest adjourned to Friday

The bail application of three men charged in connection with murder and attempted murder in Phoenix during the July unrest has been adjourned to Friday.

Brothers Dylan and Ned Govender and Jeetendra Jaikissoon are accused of the crimes after a group of Phoenix residents allegedly attacked five unarmed men as they were walking down a suburban road during the July civil unrest.

Magistrate Irfaam Khalil denied the defence’s application to get a copy of a video showing the events of the unrest.

Khalil says the video will instead be shown in court on Friday with both the State and the defence’s expert present to view the footage.

Authorities in the North West deny theft of aircraft at Mahikeng Airport

Authorities in the North West have denied claims that several aircraft were stolen from the Mahikeng Airport – after three trucks, allegedly transporting aircraft parts, were impounded by police.

The aircraft were dismantled at the Mahikeng Airport. However, owners of the dismantled aircraft allegedly failed to produce ownership documents and proof of payments made to customs. There’s a call for a proper investigation into the matter from a community member advocate Thuso Molifi.

“What we would like to see happening, is to see the government and the powers that be, should be aware that we are here, and the time is now. That we like to see the law taking the course and those who are responsible being brought to book before it’s too late,” says Molifi.

The owner of the aircraft parts, Anton Greyling, contradicts the authorities.

“The aircraft was given to me by the owner, get rid of the aircraft. So, I contacted a contractor and to remove them from Mafikeng to the refinery, which they were doing. The only problem was, we did not give him a permit on the trucks as they were driving on the road. So, everything else was done. It was all cleared by customs, and there’s no issue,” says Greyling.
