University of Limpopo reduces intake of first year students

The University of Limpopo says it only admits a total of 5 175 first year students for the 2021 academic year. All registration and application processes were conducted online.

University spokesperson Kwena Masha says the university received a large number of applicants.

“We can only take 5 175 and because of that unfortunately and in the past I would say that this is a good problem that there are lots of interest of students to come to the university of Limpopo. We hope that with the transition to online platform, there will be some stage where there is a revision of the quotas because now they do not have to compete for a number of a small class now we can be available online maybe at that stage we can have more in terms of the allocation that are allocated to us.”

The EFF Student Command at the University is, however, unhappy that no students are welcomed to register manually.

The student command’s campus coordinator Khutjo Mamabolo, “University of Limpopo has embarked on what they call one hundred online registration, they embarked on that from the third of March 2021 with post graduate students and students who are doing health sciences.

As the EFFSC we are not entirely opposed to online registration. We are opposed to one hundred percent online registration because there will be some students who are coming from unprivileged backgrounds who will not have data, rather laptops to execute online registration.”
